Ardara (Ard an Ratha)
Dieses Städtchen ist das Zentrum des
handgearbeiteten Tweeds in
Donegal. Um sich über die Tweedherstellung im allgemeinen und die Geschichte Ardaras zu
informieren, empfiehlt sich ein Besuch im Ardara Heritage
Center, untergebracht im ehemaligen Gerichtsgebäude in der
Ortsmitte.
Anfang des 19 Jhd. begann der Aufstieg Ardaras zum Zentrum der
Tweedindustrie, als die Weber der Stadt ihre Produkte auf
Strohballen ausstellten. Heutzutage bieten eine Vielzahl von
Geschäften entlang der Hauptstrasse Handgearbeitete Tweed- und Strickprodukte an.
Im März zieht das Ardara Walking Festival viele Besucher an und
führt sie durch die sehenswerte Umgebung, Anfang Mai (Bankhollidayweekend)
bildet das Cup of Tae Festival zu Ehren des
Fiddle-Spielers John "the Tae" Gallagher einen
musikalischen Höhepunkt.
Das ganze Jahr über bieten die zahlreichen Pubs von Ardara
Gelegenheit zu Traditional Music Sessions, nachdem man den Tag
mit Angeln am Owenea oder Owentocker River verbracht hat oder
die Maghera Caves zu Fuß oder auf dem Pferderücken erkundet hat.
